Welcome to Health In Movement

I'm an Exercise Physiologists who gets kicks out of helping people achieve their goals. My main focus is improving mobility through increasing strength, flexibility and joint stability to enable you to move with more freedom and confidence to do the things you want to be able to do. You may be someone who wants to improve your mobility to be able to keep up with kids, or have the confidence to continue to travel in retirement, are recovering from an injury, or wanting to improve your sport performance. What ever your goal, I'm happy to talk about how I may be able to help you achieve it. For some it might be being able to climb 10 steps  pain free, for others it may be walking the Kokoda trail. I provide a mobile service where we can do exercise sessions either from your home or meet you at a local park. My aim for each session is not only to provide you an effective workout but to help enhance your knowledge of how your body works and what you can do to reach your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mobility? What restricts mobility?

Mobility is defined as the ability to move freely. This definition will have different meaning to everyone. For some its being able to run long distances with ease, for others its being able to get down low and pull out weeds from the garden. Mobility is restricted by inflexible or weak muscles, weak movement patterns ,and sometimes pain, which can all be improved with regular specific exercises. Being overweight also restricts your mobility both because its harder to carry the extra weigth and get up and down, and extra limb circumference limits the amount of movement availible at a joint. Neorological conditions can also affect mobility which can be more of a challenge to improve ,but sometimes small improvement can make a big diffenece to every day life.

Can I improve mobility if I have an old injury?

Yes you can! Exercises done consistently in a controlled and progressive way can improve your flexibility, strength and decrease pain all contributing to greater mobility.

What does a session involve?

We start with a movement assessment to get an understanding of how you move and where you can improve. Then sessions are tailored to your individual goals and also aim to address any movement deficits found in your initial assessment. A typical session will include some flexibility work, joint stability, and strengthening movements using your own body as resistance and equipment such as free weights bands and more.

What's the best exercise for weight loss?

Exercising self discipline in the kitchen is the best way to lose weight ;-) What you eat has the largest impact on weight loss. Consulting a Nutritionist or Dietitian is my best advice. Both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training play their part in weight loss but ultimately its far easier to consume calories (from food) than it is to burn them (exercise). Example: a 12 inch subway ham sub has 900 calories. To burn 900 calories walking takes around 2 hours at 6km/hr.

“I'm 60 years old and have been training with Joe for the past 12 months. I had ongoing knee pain for years which is now almost gone completely from the training we have been doing. I now move better at work and jog regularly."
